Creation is Not a Role of the Dice
by Lloyd Tiegs                (March-April, 1999)
“...And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very
good.”
Genesis 1, v31.

The (DC)
Washington Times, August 30, 1998 carried the article, “More
proof for the claim that God does not play dice.” The article contained a book
review of How the Laws of Biology reveal Purpose in the Universe.

While it is true that Christians don’t need proof for the Bible because our
confidence comes from faith which the Holy Spirit creates in our hearts; yet,
Jesus did bid us to go to the lily of the field, the ant, etc. God’s creation gives
us object lessons which help our limited understanding of heavenly truths.
“Mr. Denton argues that human existence depends upon a long series of ‘just right’ coincidences in the physical
and chemical properties of the constituents of a living cell. He emphasizes that each constituent is the only
available or unique candidate for its particular biological role and, further, gives every appearance of being
ideally fit, not in one or two, but in all its physical and chemical characteristics.”

“His analysis of these constituents includes the fitness of the thermal properties, permeability, surface tension
and viscosity of water; the fitness of carbon compounds in the same temperature range as fluid water; the
fitness of oxygen for the generation of energy in living systems; the fitness of carbon dioxide product of oxidation
and its use in creating a bicarbonate buffer for organisms to neutralize acids; the fitness of transitional metals;
and the fitness of protein’s alpha helix matching the large groove of the DNA molecule. If these and other
constituents of the living cell did not possess exactly the chemical and physical properties they display, life could
not exist on earth.”

In the same article, Oxford chemist Michael Polyani held that genetic code would be impossible in the order in
the items in the DNA molecule were chemically necessary if DNA were so highly ordered, it could carry no more
than one instruction instead of the more than 4 million instructions contained in the DNA of the simple single
celled organism. All objects conveying information are irreducible to the laws of physics and chemistry. In the
mystery of information generation, life transcends these laws.”

While Mr. Denton is not a Christian; it is true what Prof. Klatt often said, “...even the doings of the ungodly,
unconscious to themselves must contribute to His glory and to the welfare of His kingdom.”

We do well to study those who, “in their generation are (often) wiser than the children of Light.” We use
textbooks written by non-Christians because we could not produce them as a synod.

It is just as reasonable that we study what the scientific world produces. We of course use the light of God’s
Word to evaluate the same. Some would say that is based on BELIEF, not science. So be it. So is evolution.
