Humor in Heaven
by Lloyd Tiegs                (May-August, 1999)
In school the class clown can be a real pain for the teacher. Perhaps educators
should spend some time and effort in cultivating that talent.

Eccl. 3, v. 1. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under
the heaven . . . v4. A time to weep, and a time to laugh. .
.

There are a number of kinds of laughter. The type that results from a good joke.
The type that heaps ridicule on an idea or person.

The Bible tells us He that sitteth in heaven shall laugh for he shall have them in
derision.
Prov. 1, v. 24. Because I have called and you refused: I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded: But
ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will LAUGH at your calamity; I will
mock when your fear commeth.

In 1 Kings 18, v27&28. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, Cry aloud: for he is a
god: either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be
awaked. And they cried aloud, and cut themselves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood
gushed out upon them.

Some would need further education in the school of the Holy Spirit to understand or believe that it was the
Triune God who created the world in 6 days.

However, the person who would reject God and His Word; showing him the wonders of God’s creation is “casting
the pearls before the swine.” In that situation laughter as a type of scorn may well be in place.

Often times good natured laughter or a cartoon can drive home a point better than a long discourse.

Perhaps our editor would consider a joke or cartoon section in the LSI Journal. I think we as Christians should
have more occasions to laugh. After all, we know the war over sin, death and hell has been won.

It has been said that the Republican Congress hasn’t caught on that they won the 94 election. They still act like
losers. The Democrats haven’t caught on that they lost.

Often, I think it is the same with Christians. We have every reason to laugh and rejoice. We should act as
though we are on the winning side. As Luther said of the Devil, “He’s judged; the deed is done!”
