Has Our Nation Completely Turned from God?
by Lloyd Tiegs                (January-February, 2000)
Things were going badly for Elijah. Jezebel had said the gods should kill
her if she was not able to put Elijah to death by the next day. He wanted
the Lord to take his life. God sent an angel to feed him after he had
gone a hundred miles. He then traveled another 200 miles to Mount
Horeb.

At Mount Horeb God comes to him and asks him what he was doing
there. He tells God all about the killing of the prophets. He thought he
was the only believer left.

In 1 Kings 19:18 we read; Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all
the knees which have not bowed unto Baal and every mouth which has
not kissed him.

At times we may think our nation has all turned from God. He sees the
big picture and knows that is not true.
Evolution has gained a strong foothold in our nation and the world. It has destroyed the faith of many. It is rather
interesting to read some newspaper accounts of the problems which those who push the lie of evolution
encounter.

I have taken quotes from three different papers:

Guardian Newspapers, Limited, September 14, 1999:

“Where Darwin is a dirty word for science lecturers in the U.S., teaching Big Bang and evolution is tougher than
you think, says Keith Devlin.

“For a British university scientist who makes the big trip, one startling discovery is that a staggering 44% of
Americans believe the biblical story of creation is absolutely true. For almost half the U.S. population, both the
Big Bang and the theory of evolution by natural selection are rejected outright.

“As a mathematician, I don’t normally teach evolution, but I had to lead a general education course for non-
science students in one class....I began by showing the class the first part of Stanley Kubrick’s classic movie,
2001; A Space Odyssey, which shows our ape-like ancestors discovering language, learning, knowledge and
tool use, and ends with a bone tossed into the air turning into a modern spaceship...

“My main antagonist was a bright and articulate and—apart from his huge ignorance about the scientific
method—extremely well educated and widely read. Frankly, I found it quite scary to encounter such blindness
towards evidence in someone with such ability.

The author believes that science and evolution are one and the same. He states in a later paragraph: “How can
you teach science to someone who has reached 18 and thinks it’s about which ideas you find the most
appealing? Having that student in your class four hours a week for one or two semesters is unlikely to overcome
the effects of 12 years of school education. University education can build on school; it’s hard to overturn what
was learned in school...”

That last statement should give encouragement to Christian teachers.

The New York Times, “It’s a Fact: Faith and Theory Collide over Evolution”, August 15, 1999; George Johnson.

“While creationism is built on belief in a caring, all-powerful, constantly intervening creator, who completed his
work just thousands of years ago, evolution has its own tenets of faith...”

“But the mechanisms used to measure geological time are not unshakable truths.”

“In making sense of the world, one is always free to start from different assumptions, but part of a good
education is learning what you are trading off in the bargain.”

USA Today, Arlington, September 1, 1999, Dan Vergano. “Sizing up Neanderthals and human heritage: 'Hybrid'
child adds to debate”:

“A 1997 study led by Matthias Kring of the University of Munich found no evidence of a common genetic heritage
among humans and Neanderthals based on an analysis of a tiny piece of Neanderthal DNA...”

The above has been challenged; so the debate goes on. “One unexpected critique of the Langar Belho hybrid
theory comes from a geographer, Jerome Dobson of Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. ‘Strong
indications show the child was a pathologically deformed person,’ he says, ‘specifically one suffering from iodine
deficiency, or cretinism.’ In 1998, he argued in the Geographical Review that Neanderthals may have suffered
from the so-called massive form of cretinism, which triggers large muscle growth even in children, shortened
legs, dense bones and mental retardation.

“As recently as 1960, cases of cretinism occurred only 22 miles from the Abrigo do Langar Velho, an iodine-
poor area, Dobson points out. Many parts of Europe still contain soils lacking in iodine.

“Evidence that when push came to shove, they weren’t that different from ourselves, strikes a chord.”

It would seem the pushers of evolution are not as sure of themselves as they would like us to believe. Forty-four
percent of our fellow Americans believe the creation account. In verse 12 of Chapter 19 of 1st Kings God
pointed out that He was not in the fire or earthquakes, but rather in the still small voice. We can show evidence
of creation; this helps to get a person to listen. It is the still small voice of the gospel which changes the heart.
