Creation in the Psalms by William Bein (March-April, 2006)

King David and his fellow psalmist lived between 1000 before Christ and the date of the last Psalmist is
unknown. According to many today, those people lived in the dark ages and had no idea of creation, God,
preservation or even science.
This would make many of the Psalms as much as 3,000 years old. We need to remember they were probably
3,000 years closer to the original creation. With that in mind, let’s see what they have to say about God’s
Creation.
Psalm 8: 3"When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You
have set in place." There is a direct connection with the heavens to the Lord. The Psalm did begin with 1"O
Lord, our Lord." There is no hint of a "big bang" or accidents. All according to His design.
Psalm 19: What are the heavens saying? 1"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the
work of His hands." There is an omnipotent Creator behind all creation.
Psalm 24: 1"The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; 2for He founded it
upon the seas and established it upon the waters." Not only does the whole world belong to Him, but all who
live in it are responsible to Him. Why? Because of His wonderful work of Creation.
Psalm 33: "By the word of the Lord were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath o f His mouth. He
gathered the waters of the sea into jars; He puts the deep into storehouses." These poetic words give us a
picture of the vast amount of water that surrounds us. Enough to be able to cover the earth in the great
flood. 9 For He spoke, and it came to pass, He commanded and it stood firm." This sound like a repetition of
Genesis 1.
Psalm 65: Speaking of God, our Savior, David adds 6" Who formed the mountains by Your power having
armed Yourself with strength."
Psalm 74: Again, speaking to God, Aseph, the Psalmist says 17 "It was You Who set all the boundaries of
the earth; You made both summer and winter." Where did our continents come from? Here is the answer.
Him, Who knows all and is able to do all, did it.
Psalm 90: This Psalm is attributed to Moses, 500 years closer to the creation than David. Was he guessing?
It doesn’t sound like it. 1” Lord, You have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. 2 Before the
mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are
God."
Psalm 95: 5"For the sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land." Echoes of Genesis 1.
Psalm 96: 5"For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens." This narrows down
the number of those to be worshiped to the one Creator Who has revealed Himself to us through His only
Son, Jesus.
Psalm 102: This man, afflicted with many troubles, is talking to God. Among other things, he says 25"In the
beginning You laid the foundations of the earth and the heavens are the works of Your hands." In his
troubles, he has come to recognize that the Lord is in charge and is able to handle affliction.
Psalm 104: The psalmist is going to praise God, not man 1"Praise the Lord, O My soul." In verse 5, he
continues, 5"He set the earth on its foundations; it can never by moved. 6You covered it with the deep as with
a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. 7But at Your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of
Your thunder they took to flight; 8they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the
place You assigned for them. 9You set a boundary they cannot cross, never again will they cover the earth."
Here the psalmist is describing the world-wide flood of Noah’s time. Because of the wickedness of the world,
they brought this devastation upon themselves.
Psalm 134: 3 "May the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth bless you from Zion" This was one of the songs
the people would sing on their way up to the temple in Jerusalem. As is confessed in the Apostles’ Creed, "I
believe in God, the Father, Maker of heaven and earth.”
Psalm 136: This Psalm reminds us with the repetition of "His love endures forever" that the fact is His mercy
does endure forever. 3Give thanks to the Lord of lords (His love endures forever) 4to Him Who alone does
great wonders (His love endures forever) 5 Who by His understanding made the heavens (His love endures
forever) 6 Who spread out the earth upon the waters (His love endures forever) 7 Who made the great lights
(His love endures forever) 8the sun to govern the day (His love endures forever) 9 the moon and stars to
govern the night (His love endures forever) .
Psalm 146: The Psalm begins with 1"Praise the Lord" 5"Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose
hope is in the Lord his God, 6the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them--the Lord, Who
remains faithful forever." What great comfort and hope is here in our God Who would bring us to our eternal
home.
Psalm 148: 5"Let them praise the name of the Lord. For He commanded and they were created." LSI
