Creation of Eve

The creation of Adam and Eve were miraculous events, first Adam and then Eve from Adam. The information in
this section is not an attempt to show scientifically how God created Eve; that is impossible to do. Rather, its
purpose is to show, on the basis of molecular biology, that the biblical account of Eve’s creation falls into the
category of reality as we know it, and not into the realm of myth as some persons believe.

In Genesis 2:21-22 Eve was built asexually (vegetatively) from a rib taken from Adam’s body. Through our
knowledge of molecular biology, we not only know that asexual reproduction of animals is theoretically possible,
but in laboratories mice are actually cloned by inserting the nucleus (the genetic information) of a mouse cell
into a mouse zygote (a fertilized egg) out of which its own nucleus has first been removed. The cytoplasm of the
zygote then unlocks all the information in the implanted nucleus and mice are born.1

With certain specific exceptions, every human cell contains a complete set of chromosomes—46 of them—in its
nucleus; that constitutes all the genetic information necessary to produce another human being. Each of Adam’s
rib cells would have had all 46 chromosomes—the blueprint for building a perfect replica of himself.

Eve was formed asexually by a process which may have resembled cloning. Cloning, however, always results in
organisms of the same sex. How could a woman (Eve) be made from a man (Adam)?

Recall that among a man’s 46 chromosomes are the XY sex chromosomes, and among a woman’s 46
chromosomes are the XX sex chromosomes. In the process of creating Eve from Adam, God could have blotted
out Adam’s Y chromosome; He could have done this because he Himself is the Creator of the chromosomes.

“If the Y chromosome were destroyed in an original rib cell— or in any other somatic (body) cell of Adam’s
body—the X chromosome would double itself. The resulting rib cell would then contain XX instead of XY,
together with all the other human chromosomes. This new XX cell would develop into a woman (not a man), who
would in all other aspects be just as perfect (or imperfect) as Adam himself. In this vegetative manner, the
perfect woman, Eve, could theoretically be cloned from the equally perfect Adam without the necessity of a new
creation of the human race or species being required to produce a female organism from an already created
male.”2

In the light of molecular biology, therefore, Genesis 1:21-22 is very plausible. Eve was a real person. No longer
should that account be allegorized or spiritualized by theologians. Science is catching up with the Bible. LSI
