LSI Journals from 2007 through current are
FREE in pdf at THIS LINK.

16 of these many Journals are shown above.

Publishing Both:
Print and Video

Board games—often made of simple paper and wood—are very popular today, especially among those under age 45 (Millennials and GenZ).,  A printed set of rules comes with each board game, but instead of reading printed words and seeing printed images, most choose to learn how to play the game from an online video.

Videos—The Preferred Learning Method
The preferred method of learning for more than half of those under age 45 is to watch videos!,   To best reach those people requires using videos, so LSI will start producing and distributing more creation apologetic videos.  During spring and summer 2024, we will research video styles and production options.  God willing, we will be producing videos by fall.

LSI Journal to be Published Twice Annually
Going forward, LSI will produce both printed materials (such as the LSI Journal) and videos (maybe in a variety of styles).  LSI has limited resources, which will now be split between print and video production.  To free up volunteer time, the LSI Journal will now be published twice annually instead of four times annually.  That should annually provide more than 300 hours of volunteer time for video production.

President’s ReportFall 2022

What Should I Teach About Dinosaurs?” is a creation apologetic curriculum for preschool through grade 12, published in the fall 2022 LSI Journal.  That journal was mailed to all 3,168 WELS teachers and all 104 ELS teachers. That special mailing expanded our regular mail list to nearly 4,300, making this the largest mailing LSI has ever undertaken.

Teachers enthusiastically received this apologetics curriculum when we discussed it in sectionals at a recent teacher conference (Wisconsin Lutheran State Teachers Conference, Oct 27?28).   Preschool through grade 2 teachers made up 21 of the 56 teachers who chose to attend one of my sectionals.  It is important to reach such young students since they regularly hear about millions of years in books, TV shows, and while online.  Arranging the curriculum around dinosaurs makes it more appealing to both students and teachers.  Dinosaurs are used to introduce both scientific and theological topics, providing material for both science and religion classes.

Conference Displays: LSI staff spoke with conference attendees and distributed LSI Journals at Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary’s Missions and Ministry (Feb.), the Western Wisconsin District Teacher Conference (Feb.), a Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society Rally in Connecticut (June), the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Society National Convention in New York (June), and the Wisconsin Lutheran State Teacher Conference (Oct).  LSI was not present at Men of His Word in Arizona (Jan), but each attendee received copies of multiple LSI Journals

Presentations and Interviews: My three 1-hour sectionals at the Western Wisconsin District Teacher Conference (Feb) centered on discussing classroom use of the LSI video series, “EvolutionA Christian Response.”  St. Andrew Church (Middleton, WI) had me present via Zoom video at their August 21st Bible class to discuss the Flood.  Christian Life Resources interviewed me on Oct 4, 2022 for their “Life Challenges” podcast.  Listen to “Episode 56: Discussing Evolution” at www.buzzsprout.com/1792019.  Finally, my three 1-hour sectionals at the Wisconsin Lutheran State Teacher Conference (Oct) focused on discussing classroom use of the new LSI apologetics curriculum, “What Should I Teach About Dinosaurs?”

Free Books: Our annual fall “free book” offer has become a great way to reach people who are interested in creation apologetics, but who were unaware that LSI existed.  This year’s offer just began, but already over 100 people have requested free books (65 during the 7 days prior to writing this report—on November 22).  Congregations began advertising this offer in their bulletins/newsletters just last week.  It is our experience that people who take the time to request a set of books are more likely to read them and to become LSI supporters than people who are handed an LSI Journal at a conference they attend.  Also, the free books are mailed with a cover letter advertising the LSI video course and Bible study, which has resulted in an increased viewership of our online videos.  This free book offer is available until February 28, 2023 at www.LutheranScience.org/store

LSI Members

Nearly 8 in 10 LSI members have a college degree, and 65% of those members have a masters or PhD. Many of those degrees are in theology or education, as 27% of LSI members are pastors and 23% are teachers. More than 1 in 10 members have a science degree, many of those with a masters or PhD. LSI members have PhDs in a variety of fields including biology, geology, chemistry, and physiology. About 10% of members with science degrees are medical doctors (MD). LSI membership has grown by 79% over the past five years, to 424 members today.  [As reported in the spring 2022 LSI Journal].

* The LSI Trust Fund checking account at USbank was closed in 2021, and its $2,308.35 (plus $91.65 from the Operating Fund) was used to purchase two $1,200 LACE notes. This will result in a $78.00 annual income increase for the Trust Fund. LACE is the WELS/ELS Lutheran Association for Church Extension at www.LaceInc.org

Financial support in 2020 came from forty-two individuals and groups (such as congregations) who provided $14,760 in gifts and dues.  This included twenty individuals and two congregations who donated $5,500 to the new LSI Special Projects Fund, allowing LSI to produce a creation apologetic video series.

COVID canceled many 2020 conferences and conventions where LSI would have distributed thousands of LSI Journals and spoken to hundreds of people.  This presented opportunities to reach people in other ways, such as mailing the LSI Lesson Book to all WELS/ELS congregations,  mailing print LSI Journals to high school and college teachers, offering free sets of past print journals, and initiating a large apologetic video project.  Each of these initiatives introduced LSI to people who were unaware of the resources LSI offers.

Plans are to continue with new and expanded programs while also participating in conferences and conventions when those events restart.  That goal will increase the LSI budget and require additional financial supporters.

Please consider a gift to LSI in 2021 so that our pastors, teachers, students, and laity continue to receive the apologetic materials for which they are looking.   Consider a gift of $25, $125, $250, $500, or more.

LSI in Your Will

The LSI Trust Fund is ready to receive estates of all sizes, whether $3,000 or $300,000. The Trust Fund accumulates funds for larger ministry programs and possibly for a paid staff to do expanded ministry that our volunteer staff is unable to do.  It also ensures LSI operating expenses are met in years of income shortfall, as occurred in 2016 when the trust provided $2,000 toward operating expenses. The LSI Trust Fund was created in late 2014 and is governed by this document.

President’s Annual Report
Lutheran Science Institute, inc.
November 30, 2020

2020 was another year of amazing growth for the Lutheran Science Institute (LSI).  Multiple new programs were started, and record donations were received to fund those programs.  Membership grew by 10% to 402 members.  2020 was a unique year for LSI as five large conferences and conventions were cancelled in response to the virus.  LSI had planned to distribute thousands of LSI Journals at these events.  This presented an opportunity to massively increase mailing of the LSI Journal.

LSI Lesson Book: 2,150 print copies of the 48-page 2nd edition LSI Lesson Book (titled Evolution –a Lutheran Response) were mailed to a list that included every WELS/ELS congregation and hundreds of science and religion teachers at our high schools and colleges.  This mailing was four times larger than our normal quarterly mailing of the print LSI Journal.  Congregations use this LSI Lesson Book for adult Bible study, and it serves as a textbook in high schools and colleges.  Feedback from those receiving this mailing was very encouraging.  Another large mailing to congregations and teachers is planned for 2021.

Free Book Offer: The fall 2020 LSI Journal advertises an offer of a free print LSI Lesson Book and two LSI Journals (totaling 112 pages) to anyone who requests them.   Emails about this offer were sent to the 129 congregations who receive the LSI Journal and to all LSI members.  Some congregations placed this offer in their newsletter or bulletin.  As a result, 115 people requested the free books.  Two-thirds of those people had no previous relationship with LSI, so this was a great way to reach people that would otherwise not be reached.  This free book offer ends on December 31, 2020.  Due to its success and the very positive feedback received, another free book offer is planned for 2021.

Video Project: Ten English and ten Spanish videos, based on the LSI Lesson Book, are being produced for use by WELS mission groups Academia Cristo and TELL.  LSI has partnered with WELS Multi-Language Productions (MLP) to produce these videos.  LSI provided ten video scripts (1,000 words each) to MLP, and MLP is now producing the videos.  God willing, all twenty of these videos should be available for free on the LSI website by early 2021.  LSI will heavily advertise these videos for use in schools (grades 5-12) and for use in adult Bible study.

Summer Offering: LSI members gave 27 gifts totaling $5,500 during a special summer offering.  $4,500 of this is LSI’s share of the lesson book video production costs (MLP will fund the remaining costs).  $1,000 of this offering is now in a new “LSI Special Project Fund” to help LSI get a head start on new opportunities as they arise in the future.

Congregational Membership: Ten congregations joined LSI as voting members in 2021.  Consider asking your WELS or ELS congregation to join LSI.  Member congregations receive three free print copies of the quarterly LSI Journal and half price on back issues.  LSI offers assistance and ideas to help these congregations better address their creation apologetic needs.  Congregational membership is free.  For more details, or to apply for membership, go to www.LutheranScience.org/Congregation or contact LSI via mail or phone.

Lower Price for the Print LSI Journal
January 2020

Costs to print and mail the LSI Journal have gone down due to rapidly increasing volume.  Instead of using first-class postage we can now use non-profit postage (the first to mail that way was the fall 2019 LSI Journal).  Printing and mail processing costs have also gone down with our increasing mail volume.  These costs have gone down even with our switch to a heavier weight cover to the journal and using a clear polybag instead of a paper mailing envelope.

These lower costs are reflected in new lower prices for subscribing to the print journal.  The 3-year subscription price has for many years been set at LSI's expected cost.  That will continue with the new pricing:

1-year subscription is now $7.99 (was $13.00).
3
-year subscription is now $19.99 (was $29.00).

Mailing to all WELS and ELS congregations

LSI plans to mail a print LSI Lesson Book (second edition) to all WELS and ELS congregations in 2020 (probably in summer).  Many WELS pastors have never heard of LSI, so this mailing will be a great introduction.  The second edition of the LSI Lesson Book will probably be 48 pages with several additional lessons.   The color print Lesson Book will mail in a clear polybag as opposed to a paper envelope (as will all future mailings of the LSI Journal).

2020 Budget
The LSI Board set the 2020 budget to $11,400 at its November 9, 2019 meeting.  This is a $1,700 increase over the 2019 budget of $9,700.

Emphasis for 2020
At its Aug 24, 2019 meeting, the LSI Board set the following goals for the coming year:

      1. Mailing to all WELS/ELS congregations.
      2. Congregational voting membership.
      3. Make LSI website secure: https
      4. Attend 2020 ELS convention, apologetics seminar, and Lutheran free conference in Mankato MN.
      5. Publish additional classroom materials.

Apologetic Materials for Classrooms (5K - Grade 8)
January 11, 2019

A committee of teachers has been appointed and has begun to produce creation apologetic materials for grade schools. Some preliminary lessons may be published in 2019 editions of the LSI Journal.

Conferences
January 11, 2019

LSI is significantly increasing its presence at conferences and conventions in 2019.  This will put creation apologetic materials into the hands of more pastors, teachers, and laity than ever before. An extra blessing from the Lord is that one-on-one discussions at these conferences often open doors, leading to new ministry opportunities for LSI.

Circulation of the LSI Journal has quadrupled in the past two years from 168 to 671 (399% increase).   The growth of pdf copies is due to our growing membership.  The growth of color print copies is due to increasing bulk subscriptions and increasing distribution at conferences.

Publication in WLQ
July 8, 2016

An article by LSI president Mark Bergemann has been published in the summer 2016 issue of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary's theological journal (Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly - WLQ). "The Narrow Lutheran Middle Road for Creation" is an expanded version of an article of the same title previously published by LSI.  The WLQ version is 20% longer.  Each issue of the WLQ is 80 pages in length and can be purchased from Northwestern Publishing House (www.NPH.net).

To our knowledge, this is only the second WLQ article centering on apologetics since at least 1950.  The first article was, "Creation, Science, and Our Approach in Apologetics," by Dr. Arthur A. Eggert (Fall 2015).  Both articles were published in the past 24 months and both are on creation apologetics.  Publication of these articles reflects the desire of our WELS leadership to better define the Lutheran position regarding creation apologetics.

Survey Report Released

Our report about our "Survey of Creation Apologetics Used in the WELS" was published on January 25, 2016.  Over 4,000 WELS called workers are being sent an email link to this survey report.  The 28 page survey report and its 72 pages of appendixes are available HERE.

LSI Board Meeting Delayed

The LSI Board meeting scheduled for January 9, 2016 has been delayed until Saturday, February 27, 2016. This was done to allow time for board members to complete work on the creation survey project.  That project has taken about 600 volunteer hours of our board members.

Future LSI Board meetings:
Saturday, April 9th, 2016, 1 pm (2nd Saturday after Easter)
Saturday, June 11th, 2016, 1 pm (2nd Saturday in June)
Saturday, October 8th, 2016 1 pm (2nd Saturday in October)
Saturday, January 14th, 2017, 1 pm (2nd Saturday in January)

LSI Board Meeting –October 17, 2015

The LSI Board met for 2.5 hours with Dr. Arthur Eggert.  Dr. Eggert wrote the 27 page Fall 2015 Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly article, “CREATION, SCIENCE, AND OUR APPROACH IN APOLOGETICS” (WLQ is published by Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary.)   This may be the first article ever published by the WLQ devoted to creation apologetics.  This is a good sign that the WELS is ready to have a needed synod-wide discussion of creation apologetics.

On the Road with LSI - Aug 2015

WELS members are eager to have an open discussion about the temptation of evolution.   In the past six months, we have spoken with hundreds of WELS pastors, teachers, and laity about creation apologetics (including many WELS administrators and WLS/MLC/WLC professors).  So many expressed their support for the ministry of LSI.  Over 600 LSI article reprints were taken from our displays at three WELS convention/seminars in the first half of 2015.  Details Here

Facebook: One hundred eighty-two people have now “liked” the LSI Facebook page. About 86 people visit per day. The post with the most views since June 1 was the July 11 post —A Scientist Who Shouldn’t Exist. The board increased Conference Display expenses for 2015 from $1,200 to $1.780, and increased the overall 2015 budget from $3,450 to $4,000.  This provides LSI funding to display at two WELS teacher conferences in October.

LSI Website Report, May 23, 2015

1,281 people made 1,394 visits to LutheranScience.org in the past 30 days (April 22 – May 22, 2015).   That’s over 46 visits per day.  297 visits were longer than 61 seconds.  345 viewed more than 1 webpage.  4,031 people made 5,959 visits to LutheranScience.org in the past year (May 23 2014 – May 22 2015).

LutheranScience.org switched from a Yahoo hosted website to a Finalweb hosted website on May 21, 2014.  Such changes break many links to a website and result in a loss of visitors for a while.  Our new LSI website has more than recovered.  During its first 6 months (May 23 – Oct 22, 2014) our new website averaged 6.8 visitors per day,  Now it averages 42.1 visitors/day (April 23 – May 22, 2015).

We have also found that we drastically undercount visitors to the new site.  A large portion of our visitors come directly to one of our 250  LSI articles.  The old website had these articles in html format, so all such visitors were counted.  The new website has all documents in pdf format, and visitors coming directly to those articles (such as through a Google search) are NOT counted.

The board increased Conference Display expenses for 2015 from $650 to $1,200, decreased advertising expenses from $300 to $50, and increased the overall 2015 budget from $3,200 to $3,450.  This allows LSI funding to display at the WELS convention and expand its displays elsewhere.
